About LA Knob and Tube

LA Knob and Tube replaces knob and tube wiring in older houses across the City of Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale and South Pasadena. The work is carried out by licensed and insured electrical contractors.

What the work covers

The work is about one wiring system: the knob and tube that older Los Angeles houses were built with, and what replaces it. That means finding which runs are still live, replacing them with modern grounded circuits, and leaving a record of what changed.

  • Partial replacement: Replace the live circuits that matter now and document exactly where the old system stops.
  • Inspection: Find out which circuits are still live, what condition the reachable wiring is in, and what cannot be seen.
  • Removal: Disconnect old runs for good, prove they are dead, and pull out the ones that are worth removing.
  • Plaster-wall rewiring: Route new circuits through the attic and crawlspace, keep openings small and planned, and agree the patching before work starts.
  • Attic insulation: Certify the old wiring under California's exception, or replace the attic circuits first and insulate without conditions.
  • Whole-house rewiring: Replace every old branch circuit, knob and tube or not, and add the circuits and protection a modern house needs.
  • Panel upgrade: Replace a fuse box or undersized panel with capacity for the new circuits, coordinated with the utility and the rewire.

Standards the work follows

  • California Electrical Code Article 394. The article that covers concealed knob and tube wiring, including the limits on burying it in insulation.
  • Arc-fault (AFCI) protection. Breakers that detect arcing on a circuit, required on new and extended branch circuits in most rooms of a house.
  • Ground-fault (GFCI) protection. Protection near water: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages and outdoors, where the code calls for it.
  • Permits and city inspections. LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, and the building departments of Pasadena, Glendale and South Pasadena.
  • Plaster-and-lath methods. Planned openings sized to the work, so walls and ceilings in older houses can be closed again cleanly.

How a job runs

The same stages on every house, whether the job is a few circuits or the whole house.

  1. First call

What you have seen, the age of the house, and any inspection, insurer or escrow deadline.

  2. Walk-through and circuit map

Which runs are live, which are dead, the panel, attic and crawlspace access, and where openings would go.

  3. Permit and rewire

Circuits are replaced in sequence, so most of the house keeps power on most days.

  4. Inspection and patching

The city inspection, a labeled panel, and the openings closed as the quote describes.

How pricing works

The site publishes typical LA-area price ranges and a cost estimator, so you can set a budget before anyone visits. The price for your house comes after the walk-through, once the circuit map shows what is live and how the attic, crawlspace and walls can be reached.
